Judo
What is ‘Judo’?
Judo (Lit. “gentle way”) is a martial art, combat sport and philosophy which originated in Japan. Judo was founded by Dr. Jigori Kano in 1882, also an Olympic sport; Judo is quite similar to both wrestling (in make-up) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (in appearance).
What does training in Judo involve?
Judo teaches safe break falling techniques (Ukemi Waza), unbalancing mechanisms (Kuzushi Waza), aesthetically pleasing yet devastating throws (Tachi Waza) and high level proficiency in ground fighting (Ne Waza). The trainee is taught various gripping strategies to take control of an opponent before unbalancing and throwing, groundwork adds another dimension to the sport where pins/hold-downs, a multitude of chokes, strangulations and joint locks can be used to finish your opponent.
The Tokon Academy Judo programme is suitable for men, women and children of all ages.
