Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

What is 'Brazilian Jiu Jitsu'?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ as it is sometimes known is predominantly a ground-based martial art that is derived from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and more recently Kodakan Judo. Similar in scope to modern day Olympic Judo, BJJ places heavy emphasis on positional strategy or positional dominance - In Jiu-Jitsu the position you are in relation to your opponent is paramount.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu first seeks to establish a position (control of your opponent) and then to finish the fight via submission utilising efficient leverage from either top or bottom positions. So concerned with efficiency and economical movement Jiu-Jitsu is solely considered the #1 martial art for self-defence and is a perfect for men women and children. An art form as well as a sport practiced by millions, Jiu-Jitsu is many things to many people; to understand it, you must simply try it!

What does training BJJ involve?

A typical class involves a steady functional aerobic warm-up followed by some positional drilling with or without a partner until the body is warmed locally and completely for the work to be done throughout the class. Class is usually focused on one specific theme that ultimately leads to standing or ground sparring with a partner.
